In all its endeavours the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise is guided by a Statute. The original statute was enacted by the Chamber’s founding members on 6th April 1848. Over the years this has evolved into a body of regulation keeping the Chamber up to date with modern requirements. This is in constant evolution and development and for this purpose Council is guided and assisted by a Statute Revision Committee.
The Chamber is also conscious of its role in providing networking opportunities for its members. It is for this reason that a number of social events have become part of the Chamber’s calendar.
Annual General Meeting - The Statute requires the Chamber to hold an Annual General Meeting during the first half of December. During this meeting the President delivers an address to members in which policy issues are usually identified.
Administrative Report – Towards the end of each year the Chamber Secretariat produces the Administrative Report. This provides a detailed account of the Chamber’s endeavours and activities during the last twelve months. The Administrative Report is presented for approval at the Annual General Meeting.
Elections – The election of members of the Council are held bi-annually and open on the day of the Annual General Meeting. In each Election for the Council only ten members of the previous Council are eligible for re-election. Candidates for election must signify their intention to accept nomination and must be proposed and seconded on the official Nomination Paper ten clear days before the date fixed for the Election.
Trade Section Annual General Meetings and Elections – Similarly the Chamber’s eleven Trade Sections hold their Annual General Meetings during the first half of November of each year. The Chairman of each section delivers a brief address outlining the section’s activities during the previous year. During the meeting an election is held for five members to form the Executive Committee for the coming year.
Council Meetings – The Council of the Chamber meet on a monthly basis as stipulated by the Statute. Additional meetings are occasionally held to deal with matters of urgency and importance. The Chamber’s Officers are elected during the first meeting of the year.
Council Dinner – Towards the end of each year, Council holds a dinner to which member’s spouses are guests of honour. This dinner serves to acknowledge the contribution and long hours each member has dedicated to the business of the Council.
Council Buffet Lunch – This event is traditionally held between Christmas and New Year. The participants at the Council Buffet Lunch are the members of the Outgoing Council, the Incoming Council, the Electoral Commission, Honorary Officers and the Chamber staff.
President’s Reception – Possibly the main event in the Chamber’s social calendar, the President hosts this annual event in the Chamber’s ballroom. The guests at this event include the President of Malta, the Prime Minister, Government Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition, Members of the Shadow Cabinet, the Diplomatic Corps, Chairmen of Government Corporations, Diplomatic Corps, Heads of Government Departments as well as Chamber members and other guests.
Al Fresco Evening – The Al Fresco evening is an opportunity for members to meet in informal surroundings. The venue changes every year and has been held on both Gozo and Comino, the homes of Presidents and in leading hotels.
